4 Holiday Events to Attend in Nassau

It’s the holidays! That time of the year when you’re with your family and friends eating and drinking and having a good ole merry time. When everyone from your mom, your job, your aunt and your best friend’s sister cousin son is having a party and you have invites to all. Special mention goes to all the “Hey, I’m coming home next week” texts and “We gotta hang out before I leave” people that you see at the one event your friends dragged you to. In the Bahamas, we know how to truly enjoy the holidays and while we may not be able to build a snowman, we sure can make sandcastles. The weather is usually in the high 70s in the day and high 60s at night. We are a tropical paradise always. With the holidays coming up, here’s four exciting and seasonal events to attend this December:

1. Best of the Best Regatta, December 6-9 (Montague Beach): Over the past 2 weeks, I’ve watched Montague Beach transformed, filling up with tents and tables. I asked around about what was happening there, but no one knew. After a bit of research, I found out what the event was.  For it’s third year, Best of the Best brings regatta to New Providence. This weekend long event will  feature top local and international sloop sailors. However, if you don’t fancy boating, the event features amazing entertainment from Bahamian artists, food vendors, alcohol suppliers, a kiddie corner and of course, what’s a Bahamian festival without Junkanoo? Being an all day event, like literally, something is happening when the sun is shining and when the moon comes out to play; this can be a family affair. If all of that, didn’t grab your attention, admission is also FREE. D’Mac and MDeez said it best, Regatta time again, we ready to party!

2. National Exhibition Nine (NE9), December 13 (National Art Gallery of The Bahamas): I love art shows. It’s just something about seeing someone’s expression of life in an art form, whether through a painting or sculpture. It usually ignites a fire in me and puts my creative juices on overdrive. Bahamians are honestly, super talented and everything Bahamian artist, Jodi Minnis produces or recommends I take it to he(art). Lol, that was pretty corny, but you get it. You should definitely check out the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas’ opening reception for it’s newest exhibition. It promises to highlight local artists perspectives on gender, class and race. 3. Blackout, December 21st (Fort Charlotte): The year is 2011, I’m a freshman in college and everyone is talking about this huge annual party happening right before Christmas, called “Blackout”. Usually whenever I hear that phrase, I automatically think, “Muddasick current off”, which means that the electricity is not working (for those who do not speak Bahamianese, I got you). However, this was definitely not the case, thankfully! Blackout is an all night party where, everyone is dressed in their best black outfits and the music is blasting and the drinks are flowing, up until the wee morning hours. You can literally party here until the sun comes up. It’s a memorable event and I think everyone should attend at least once.

4. Dis Brunch Solid Too, December 23rd (Doongalik Studios): Ya girl lives for a good brunch! Mimosas, art and music, what could possibly be better than that? This event is hosted by an 90% all male podcast (yes, there’s one girl, shout out to you sis) called “Pulp Fiction”, who creatively collaborate with local businesses to provide an experience like none other. Executive Producer Pun, stated, “We wanted chill and current music curation in a nice venue that allowed for a fake boujie appearance but with real, down to earth energy at the heart of it”. I even heard that there is going to be cheesecake, mojitos, and mini golf. How cool is that? This is truly a different kind of brunch experience.
