My Stay in Treasure Cay, Abaco: Part One

It’s officially been a month since I took my first solo trip to Treasure Cay, Abaco. I’ve been to Abaco before, hey, I even lived there for a few weeks last summer. I never made it up North to Treasure Cay though. The “Two Fly Free” Promotion has been going on for a while now and I was longing to take another trip before 2018 ended. So, one random morning (see: around 2am) I was online looking at Treasure Cay’s rates. Would you believe, that with the promotion, I was able to stag my room at $67 a night? I don’t know about you, but I think that’s a steal!

I did not know what to  expect; I didn’t make a list of things to do while there. My plan was to go with the flow. I had an idea of one thing I wanted to do each day, but that’s it. I think sometimes we get so caught up in planning a trip, trying to see and do everything, that we still come back home exhausted and needing to take a vacation. I totally get exploring, its necessary. You can’t travel to a destination without seeing the place, like what’s the point? However, on short trips (3 days or less) you really have to take time to relax and unwind. I definitely did that, it felt so good not to have to wake up to an alarm and be on my own schedule.

I took the first flight out to Treasure Cay at 6:30am. I was excitingly tired, if that’s even a thing. I was going off on 4 hours of sleep, but so happy to be taking my first solo trip. I didn’t know anyone in Treasure Cay; it was all me. We landed around 8am, after a stop into Marsh Harbour and straight onto a taxi I went to Treasure Cay Resort. My 10 minute taxi ride was $30. I wasn’t surprised at the rate because I did some research before; TripAdvisor is your  friend! I drove in Abaco before, so I wasn’t afraid of doing it. However, because I was really only there for about 2 days, I didn’t think that it made sense for me to rent a car at $85 a day, plus VAT and gas. No, thank you.

Working in the hospitality industry, I know, the earlier you arrive at your hotel the better. You get the best choice in rooms and first preference in anything that is happening at the hotel that day. Knowing this, I had no issue with arriving at the resort bright and early. My room was not ready and that was totally fine, I was able to check in, no lines and have my bags stowed away until time. I waited in the lobby area and chatted with the front desk agent who was able to give me the scoop on enjoying my stay and still not breaking the bank. I was so grateful for her suggestions and she was super friendly. I already told you, Solo travel can be expensive. Did you read my last blog post “5 Tips for Taking Your First Solo Trip in 2019”?

I decided to explore the grounds of the resort I was going to call home for the next 2 (actually 4, lol) sleeps. Treasure Cay Resort is so cute, it reminded me of  Spanish Wells, Fat Tuesday and Paradise Island Harbour Resort (you a real one if you remember that), all in one. Yellow, pink, blue and green buildings painted the skyline while coconut and palm trees swung in the wind. The property is surrounded by a small plaza, housing, a grocery store, a liquor store, restaurants, an ATM and more. I went across the street for breakfast at Coco’s Beach Bar, it literally sits on the beach and is really creatively decorated.

After breakfast, I went back to the front desk to check on the status of room and guess what? It was clean and ready at 10am and they upgraded me to a marina view! Remember what I said about arriving early to hotels? For a $67 per night rate, I had no idea what my room would look like. I was a bit anxious, to my surprise though, my room was really clean and comfortable. I also had a microwave & fridge, that came in super handy. The bed, wow, that bed was just made for sleeping in. I struggled everyday to get out of it.

Its after 5pm, the sun is setting and I am just getting up. I literally had the best 6 hour nap ever. I woke up so grateful, feeling blessed to be there in that moment taking the beauty of Abaco all in. I was starving, by this time, but had to save my appetite.  It was “Pizza Night”  at Treasure Cay Resort. An event that I had been hearing about since July, I had to see what all the hype was about. I got a few snacks from the grocery store and a bottle of wine to start my night, showered and headed out to experience one of Abaco’s most raved about events.

The Abaconians were out in “full force”. Everywhere I looked there were families, couples and friends drinking Kaliks and eating pizza. Since it was only me, I had planned to order a slice or two. Unfortunately, the pizza only came as small, medium and large pans. I ordered a Meat Lover’s small pan (8 slices) for $22. It was really yummy. Sounds of “Funky Town” and “Come on baby , let’s do the twist” could be heard and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. After the live performances were done and the families started to leave, the deejay continued the party with songs of Akaline, Drake and a few 90s reggae hits. I headed to my room around 11pm to unwind and relax before bed. I had a great day and was happy to get back into that wonderful bed.
