The sun was shining, the birds were chirping and I was waking up in paradise. It’s just something about waking up without an alarm that makes me so happy. If you haven’t realized by now, I love to sleep and it’s so important to me to have a good rest. Anyway, that’s a story for another time, back to my Abaconian adventure.
My day started after 11 am, I headed out to the pool just to lounge and relax. There was absolutely no one else there. I literally had the pool all to myself, but it was so windy, that I just laid out instead, watching episodes of Neo Yokio (found that randomly scrolling on Instagram and Netflix the night before).
After about an hour, I went back to my room to get ready to head to the Ferry dock. I was so excited to visit another of Abaco’s cays. I had already visited Hope Town and Great Guana Cay and marveled at their uniqueness and charm. I couldn’t wait to see what Green Turtle Cay had to offer. I made it for the 1:30 pm ferry and could see the cay in the distance. As we came closer, I realized that the island was a lot larger than I anticipated. I actually thought, I was going to be able to walk the entire cay. I definitely was wrong and I needed a golf cart and more hours if I wanted to accomplish that. I came off at the first stop “New Plymouth” and had 3 hours to explore.
I wanted to visit the Albert Lowe Museum. I started walking, not knowing where to go. After a minute of aimlessly walking, I remembered, I had Google Maps and could use that to try to navigate the path to the museum. I was following the map and still was lost. Luckily, the museum was easy to find and if I was really lost, there was always someone passing, waving hello, that I could ask. The museum was so close to the dock, it’s probably just a 2 minute walk.
The Albert Lowe Museum is rich in the history of the island. I learned so much about the little cay and the role the museum plays in keeping the history and culture alive. It’s definitely worth a visit if you ever visit Green Turtle Cay.
It was 2:30 pm and I was starving and decided to walk around the island to see which restaurants were opened. After stopping to 2 places and having a look at their menu options; I chose Miss Emily’s Blue Bee Bar and had the Original Goombay Smash and the BEST conch burger, also known as the “Barefoot Bandit.” The conch was so tender, it was amazing. It reminded me of calamari. The burger was topped with the freshest vegetables and served with seasoned fries. I don’t know what was in that drink, but it was so good. I’d recommend that lunch pair to everyone!
I was completely stuffed and needed to walk off the food. I had about an hour left before the ferry came back, so exploring I went. I came across and old jail, an abandoned hotel and a memorial sculpture garden. Who knew this cay had all these stories?
Visiting Green Turtle Cay was a wonderful experience. I tapped into my history nerd, foodie and adventurer fountains all in one day. Solo Travel is so empowering, you get so immersed in the world around you, trying to figure things out on your own. If you can, take a trip somewhere, anywhere, alone and see your true self blossom.
I realize I need to restart vacationing in my own home.
