We’re back! With the hopeful rise in domestic tourism, it’s only fitting that we bring back the “Where Ya Been” series. Exploring The Bahamas is so enjoyable and I am counting down the weeks to my next out island adventure. I’m not sure as yet where I’m going, but the ideas of Bimini, Grand Bahama and Eleuthera are dancing around in my head. Yeah, I really need to finalize my plans. If you’re new to my blog or just haven’t read the previous posts in this series, you can check them out here and here.
Sandy Franks: Adventurer, Sailor, Island Girl
Sandy started travelling some ten years ago and has been hooked ever since. She has visited a total of 48 countries. It was the norm (pre Corona, of course) for her to jump on an airplane with no end game and end up somewhere and make the best of it. She got the tag “Adventure Traveler” from her cousins who claim that every time she travels she totes a very unfashionable backpack and looks like a black Dora the Explorer. The name suited her, because whether it’s hiking Macchu Piccu, sandboarding in Dubai or ziplining in Puerto Rico, you name it and she’ll try it! All with the goal of visiting every country in the world! Sandy is the Founder of Island Food Tours and Co-founder of True Love Travel. She recently visited Long Island and here’s what she discovered:
- Why was Long Island your first trip post quarantine? What’s so special about the island?
Long Island was on my list because I wanted an off the beaten path experience and wanted to explore an island I’d never been too before. I fell in love with it because the water was soooo beautiful. I instantly felt like I was on vacation.
2. What is your favorite thing to do on the island?
My favorite thing to do on Long Island is swim with the pigs! Also visit the sand bars and pet the nurse sharks.
3. What are your must haves (favorite dishes) when visiting?
Must haves: a Goombay Smash from Busted Bridges Bar and steamed grouper from Lloyd’s. My fave dish from Long Island is mutton! I can’t go there and not indulge, it is the mutton capital of The Bahamas.
4. Where should you stay when in Long Island?
I’ve only ever stayed at Harbor Breeze Hotel, but it is so cozy, clean and cute. I would definitely recommend.
5. Describe Long Island in 5 words or less…
Hidden Gem!
